Best Shows to Watch on Netflix, best t.v shows to watch on netflix, top shows to watch on netflix, best shows to watch on netflix india, top 10 shows to watch on netflix

Are you due for a Netflix binge? Don’t know what to watch? Well, that’s why we’re here! While Netflix has a ton of great shows, it also has a ton of rubbish thrown into the mix. You don’t want to start a show that turns out to be a total waste of time. The motivation for this blog comes from the serial binge watcher within me. After a long week of work, I look forward to kicking back with some snacks and watching a good show that doesn’t leave me feeling like I’ve just lost valuable time that I will never get back. But many of us bingers often find themselves lost in choices. Which show should I watch next, there are simply too many options! While looking for a new show to watch myself, I thought I would lend a helping hand to my fellow avid show watchers with some decent options to choose from.

I have categorized them as best I could by genre. Genres do overlap so keep that in mind. Every once in a while you may be due for a nostalgic rerun and so I have thrown in a classics section that includes shows like, The Office. Bear in mind, classics doesn’t necessarily mean old. I have included in this a few reasons to watch each show, and a few downsides as well. I think it is important to know both beforehand.

FUNNY

1. Bojack Horseman

Talking horse, cat, dog, bird… this show has it all. I enjoyed watching Bojack Horseman. The show has depth, humor, and it’s rather different!

About:

Well, this show is about a talking horse, Bojack, who got famous for his role in a 90’s TV show, and that’s all he was ever really famous for. The title song explains this,

Back in the 90’s, I was in a very famous TV show
I’m BoJack the horse (BoJack)
BoJack the horse
Don’t act like you don’t know

And I’m trying to hold on to my past…

Bojack very much does try to hold on to the past, taking us on his narcissistic journey through dealing with post-fame cynicism.

Reasons to Watch:

Bojack Horseman is a great representation of pop-culture meets modern existence. It’s a comedic take on the Hollywood lifestyle behind the scenes. Definitely funny if you think about the weirdness that unfolds. I mean, a dog and a human get married. A horse and an owl form romantic relations. Forward-thinking…?

Downsides:

It might bother you if you take the dark side of the show too seriously. Bojack Horseman does have a lot of insight into the grimness of adult life in a certain industry.

2. Rick and Morty:

If you haven’t already, I think you must watch Rick and Morty. I found an interesting thought experiment in the New York Times that is fitting to the style of this dark nihilistic comedy. The thought experiment is as follows,

“Imagine that you grew up with the world’s tragedies being beamed into your living room by 24-hour cable news. Your country has been at war for much of your lifetime. You graduated from college with a huge amount of debt, and you entered the workforce during the recent financial crisis. Imagine, too, that the world’s ecological crisis weighs heavily on your mind and that you spend as much time on the internet as you do speaking to real human beings.

If you are this person, what kind of TV show would resonate with you?”

Best Shows to Watch on Netflix, best t.v shows to watch on netflix, top shows to watch on netflix, best shows to watch on netflix india, top 10 shows to watch on netflix If you answered the thought experiment above with something resembling, ‘a dark TV show’, well that’s Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s Rick and Morty. A dark, absurdist, verging on nihilistic, comedy. The show also touches on common emotions like alienation and anxiety. Although this might not sound very nice, somehow the show manages to pull it off in an amazingly humorous and clever manner.

About:

The show is about an alcoholic, curmudgeon, genius scientist named Rick Sanchez, and his meekly teenage grandson, Morty. Rick coaxes Morty into going on elaborate intergalactic adventures with him that are highly dangerous and ill-advised. At the same time, Rick neglects his daughter Beth and his granddaughter, Summer. In the mix is Morty’s Dad, who Beth wishes were bolder, and well, simply put, manlier.

Reasons to Watch:

Together, Rick and Morty travel the multiverse. If you’re in the mood for fun, dark, sci-fi adventures, watch the show. The humour is good and the imagination behind the show is great! The show has had a significant influence on pop-culture. Phrases like “wubba lubba dub dub” and “get schwifty” (my personal favorite) are from this show. You’re never bored with this show. Never.

Rick and Morty have been renewed for another 70 episodes, which for me is very good news. I mean the show has been ranked as the most- watched TV show for 18-34-year-olds.

Downsides:

Well like I said, the sub-context in all episodes touch upon some seriously deep aspects of human nature. It can get disheartening if you take it too seriously rather than appreciate its clever approach. Don’t take the show too seriously.

3. Sex Education

Probably one of the best shows I’ve watched this year by a stretch. So funny. I watched it all in no more than a day.

About:

The show is about high-school and high-school drama. Lots of drama. It’s called Sex Education because this intelligent popular social deviant, Maeve, convinces socially awkward, Otis, to become a secret sex therapist for teenagers at their school. Maeve just wants to make an extra buck, and Otis is into Maeve.

Reasons to Watch:

There is SO MUCH more to the show, it has a lot of layers. Like for example, Otis’s Mom is an actual, clinical, sex therapist. Which means, she is way to vocal about her practice with Otis, getting way too involved in his sex life. This is literally any teenage boys nightmare.

Downsides:

There is a lot of explicit content, so if you’re not into that kind of thing then steer clear.

4. Atypical

Atypical can be seen as a mix of comedy and drama. I think it is an interesting show to watch.

About:

The show is a sort of narrative storytelling about an autistic boy, Sam, who doesn’t quite fit in. Like any teenager, Sam wants to find a girlfriend. As you would imagine, this gets pretty awkward for someone who is already inherently very very awkward. The story gets deeper as the characters evolve. So mixed into the comedy you have a bit of drama.

Reasons to Watch:

Well, the concept and intention behind the show is unique and can be somewhat informative. It is certainly funny and filled with interesting characters.

Downsides:

I have to say that this show could be a little more original. I hope it starts giving viewers something different, something to hang onto in the seasons to come.

5. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia:

Oh you’re in for a real treat if you haven’t watched this show. Stick with it, don’t give up. You know how in most shows you come to like the characters that didn’t appeal to you at first? Yeah, this show is not like that. You never come to like the characters. They just get worse, and worse. And that’s what makes it AWESOME!

About:

Always Sunny is a dark comedy centered around five morally compromised friends in a pub in Philadelphia. All of them make you cringe. The things they say and do are just totally cringe-worthy. They obviously don’t have a lot of money, don’t have a lot going for them, and don’t have any other friends. By their own doing, I might add.

Reasons to Watch:

It’s so funny that you’re never bored. Once you accept the nature of the show, you’ll laugh till your stomach hurts. The characters are all self-centered hypocrites who joke about the most unsavoury things, like crack. But the way it’s done makes it hilarious.

Downsides:

If you don’t like vulgar shows, this one is a no-no for you. It’s Always Sunny pushes the absolute limit of gross, dark, vulgar humour.

Sci-Fi/Drama

1. Stranger Things:

I’m sure you’ve at least heard of this show. Stranger Things is one of those extremely gripping shows that takes you into the world of its characters. Winona Rider is just great in this show.

About:

After a middle school boy disappears in a small town, his mother makes it her mission to find him. In the process, she ends up uncovering a serious government conspiracy as well as a whole other supernatural issue. I won’t say any more.

Reasons to Watch:

Other than being one of the best, most vivid, sci-fi/horrors, Stranger Things also develops a strong emotional undertone the brings out the value of friendship and resilience. The storyline of Stranger Things evolves, which keeps you interested. I would say there is more reason to watch this show than not.

Downsides:

The element of fantasy and imagination runs wild in this show, so if you’re looking for something realistic then this is not your cup of tea. Also, the show uses a ton of references from sci-fi movies like, E.T.

2. Altered Carbon:

While I haven’t personally watched this show, it is on my list. I’ve heard its excellent, and reviews suggest the same.

About:

The show takes place over 360 years in the future. Based in the Bay Area, that is, San Fransisco, in this future world people can store their memories and consciousness onto a kind of disk, called a cortical stack. They can then implant that disk into any vertebrate, using these physical bodies, called ‘sleeves’, to live after death. Only when one’s disks (Stacks) are destroyed, does a person truly die.

Reasons to Watch:

Since I haven’t watched it, I’ll tell you why I want to watch it. For one, storing consciousness in something physical sounds totally mind-warping. I am curious to see the mess of problems this futuristic society will face. I assume the storyline will be quite entertaining.

Downsides:

Might get too abstract to follow after a while. But I would read some reviews on this if you have doubts about committing.

1. The OA:

I just finished watching this show, and absolutely enjoyed every weird moment of it. Currently, there are only two seasons, but honestly, even if a third isn’t on the way the show would feel complete.

About:

This is a tough one. Let me think, what is The OA about? Before watching the show, I asked my friends the same question. And they said, umm just watch it you’ll understand. I guess it’s about, a character called, The OA, and near-death experiences. I know, that probably didn’t make any sense to you. But it’s really hard to describe this show without giving anything away. So what I’ll do is I’ll give you the opening scene,

A girl, Prairie, disappeared 7 years ago. Now, after 7 years, she has suddenly been spotted in her home town jumping off a bridge in, what is assumed to be, an attempted suicide. Oh, also, she was blind before disappearing but now she can see!

Reasons to Watch:

I think the show has an unexpected quality that is just great. It keeps you on your toes all throughout. The characters are well developed and consist of a unique mix.

Downside:

The OA needs you to keep a very open mind. There are bits and pieces that get fairly intangible.

2. Bates Motel

Jeez, this show does a real number on you. I wouldn’t expect anything less. It is after all intended as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960s, Psycho. Also, the two main characters live in this creepy house you see in the image below.

About:

Bates Motel is about the strangely close relationship between a mother, Norma, and her son, Norman. Both are also very strange, especially Norman, played by Freddie Highmore. Norma is over possessive and a real can full of worms. Norman is just downright weird as hell. Neither are NORMAL. Get it? NORMA (L) NORMA(N), NOT NORMAL. Anyway, this is a good show to binge.

Reasons to Watch:

Bates motel gives you a good foundation for Psycho if you chose to go on and watch the movie. If you’re into psychological twists and bends, this show does an excellent job of it. The cinematography and acting are both also really good.

Downsides:

You have to be in the right mental state to watch this show. It’s very dark.

3. Ozark

If you thought Jason Bateman could only do comedy, you were wrong! He’s awesome in this show, very impressive and intelligent as well.

About:

Ozark is a crime drama, primarily about money laundering. Jason Bateman indirectly gets involved in some serious shit, and his family gets dragged into it as well. So they move to the Ozarks, in Missouri, America. Soon the story unfolds and you just can’t stop watching!

Reasons to Watch:

I think the main reason to watch Ozark is that it is very interesting. It makes you question what you would be willing to do to protect your family, and yourself.

Downsides:

It’s pretty slow, although that adds to its mystery. If you’re not into that kind of plot pace, then this isn’t the show for you.

Classics

1.The Office

This is a personal favorite of mine, probably one of the best spoof ‘mockumentaries’. The show is based on the British version with the same name. I have to admit I prefer the US version for the character development and Steve Carell.

About:

The show follows the lives of average people, working a 9 to 5 job at a dead-end paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Starring an extremely insensitive, annoying, and outrageous boss (Carell) albeit, with pure intentions, The Office is hilarious.

Reasons to Watch:

The top reason to watch is the humour. Great comedic timing all throughout the show. But the show also has surprising depth that unfolds like peeling an onion. Mini, and major, love stories unravel. Spoiler, Jim and Pam! So lovely. One of my favourite characters is Dwight, such a goofball.

Downsides:

If you don’t like dry humour, you won’t like this show. The show has no laugh tracks (I prefer it this way), so the awkward moments really stick out.

2. F.R.I.E.N.D.S:

“So no one told you life was gonna be this way? Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D.O.A?” Aren’t we all, at some point, in this boat? Broke, no love life, no real job. “But when it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year…I’ll be there for you!”

I grew up watching this show. Maybe I watched it too much because, at one point, I knew the lines. Almost all of the lines. Other than having outgrown laugh tracks, I think Friends deserves to go into the classics rerun section.

About:

For those who have never watched Friends, the plot of the show is in the title. It is a comedy in which we follow the day to day lives of six friends. That’s it. If you are into pop-culture literacy then watch this show. If you wondered where “we were on a break!” and “How YOU doin” comes from, it’s from this show.

Reasons to Watch:

Friends is a feel-good, warm, sitcom with excellent character development. You will find yourself watching the later seasons only because you now know their personality traits, and you understand their individual sense of humour. Friends don’t need an elaborate plot with grand ideas and twists, its charm is in its simplicity. Not surprisingly, Friends is a loveable, timeless show.

Downsides:

Like any show, Friends does have flaws. Given the time period it is set in, there is a lot of anti-gay sentiment, and fat-shaming. There isn’t much ethnic or cultural diversity either, as we see in a lot of the more recent shows.

Note, DO NOT watch the show “Joey”, based on a character in Friends. No matter how much you love Joey on Friends, the separate show itself just doesn’t work.
