Sastra University or the Shanmugha Arts, Science, technology, and research Academy, which is a private deemed university. Sastra is an abbreviated form which stands for the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy. The dreams of its founding fathers took shape in the year 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering affiliated to the Bharatathidasan University, Trichy. In the year 2001, it was renamed as the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy and it was also conferred the status of University on the 26th of April 2001 under the section 3 of the UGC act, 1956. The university has a sprawling campus having a built-up area of 222129.02 square meters spread over the 232 acres. It is also recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research by the Indian Government. The institution of Engineers has accredited all eligible B. Tech Programmes offered by the SASTRA. The MBA programs are also separately accredited by the TCS.

SASTA provides various undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs in Engineering, Arts, Management and Science. SASTRA follows the choice- based credit system. Under it, the curriculum is designed in such a way that it offers freedom to the students to choose courses from a list of departmental electives for earning around 31 credits. The course work at the time of first-year is mostly devoted to having some of the basic engineering and science courses, which constitute 61 credits. Out of the remaining 164 credits, students have to earn a minimum of 108 credits through core courses, 31 with the departmental electives, and 12 from interdisciplinary open electives. Moreover, students earn around four credits on HR skills and nine credits for the end-semester project work.

Besides that, the students can opt for four courses as open electives from a large pool of courses across the Law, Management, Science, Art, Technology disciplines. CBCS has been designed to facilitate students to complete the credit requirements at their own choice of faculty and courses. The B. Tech curriculum has 225 credits comprising of 75% theory and 25% practical courses. The final semester includes viva and project work. The B. Tech programs are spread over the four years averaging around 27 credits per semester – The AICTE UG credit which is being defined 50 minutes of lecture and 100 minutes of self – study per week, for 15 net weeks.

1. Hostels

There are six girls and nine boys hostel offering accommodation to more than 2400 girls and 4000 boys. The hostels are equipped with all amenities for dining, living, and recreation.

2. Choice of Faculty Member

The university gives a unique choice to students to choose faculty of their own choice. If the same course is taught by more than one faculty, then the students have the liberty to register under a faculty of their own choice.

3. ACRS

It stands for the Accelerated Course Registration System, and it facilitates students to register for the additional courses in order to satisfy their credit requirements with a course works that enables them to devote the entire eighth semester for a quality project work in India or abroad.

4. SAP

It stands for the Semester Abroad program, and it even enables the students to spend one semester to pursue a research or course work in a foreign university/industry of international repute. The credits earned during this program are transferred ti SASTRA for the award of the degree. The university has forged collaborations with the industries and significant international universities to facilitate student internships at the time of their final semester.

5. Skill Development Program

SASTRA University launched a free one-year skill development program in CNC Machining, Welding and Forging on 21st of February 2012. It is mostly meant for students from various challenged socio-economic backgrounds. This program was conceptualized and designed after obtaining inputs over a one-year period from many stakeholders.  A monthly stipend of INR 5000 is given to each student to meet the cost of travel, food, and learning. On successful completion of the program, the students will benefit by securing employment in nearby industries or be encouraged by SASTRA with some of the handholding facilities to start their own business. The university is also issuing a certificate for each successful student students and is also taking appropriate steps with the India Government to grant ITI equivalence to this certificate to enable students to integrate into mainstream formal higher education.

6. Library

One of the best interesting facts about Sastra University is its library. Saraswathi Sadan is the name of the central library. It is spread around an area of 47000 sq. ft with modern study area, internet, an audiovisual room, and reprographic facilities. Saraswathi Sadan contains around 78000 books which have been valued at INR 3.5 crores; the library subscribes to 300 journals and periodicals, which includes the IEEE publications. The library also subscribes to online journal database like Science Direct, ASME, ACME, SCE, SCOPUS, DELNET, ebrary, etc., offering access to more than 3200 scientists, management and technical journals and bibliographic database of around 17000 journals. It also subscribes to PROQUEST Digital Dissertation database which provides access to more than 550000 Ph.D. dissertations.

SASTRA university library is the only university in India to purchase the entire suite of Springer’s Electronic Collection of more than 8000 e-books. The library also subscribes to e-Brary, which offers access to more than 35000 full textbooks. The networking of the entire campus offers seamless access to all the online database for simultaneous use by an unlimited number of users.

7. CeNTAB

Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Biomaterials is an interdisciplinary research center. It is spread around more than 200000 sq ft at the cost of INR 42 crore, this facility houses around 75 research labs with the state-of-the-art facilities like the Spectroscopy Suite, Microscopy Suite, etc., besides some of the other major equipment and more than 20 research labs.

8. Research

Major research facilities are available for all the students and faculty from SASTRA as well as from some of the other institutions. It has various equipment for research like X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, Confocal microscope, Field emissions transmission electron microscope with energy dispersive spectrometer and others.

9. Solar Plant

The solar plant installed by the Tata Power Solar is expected to meet 25% of the university power requirement.

10. Sports

To promote excellence in sports and offer organized relaxation and entertainment, which is an indoor stadium Maruti has been constructed and equipped with the badminton courts, basketball court, carrom board, table tennis and billiards tables with indoor lighting facility. To maintain and establish a healthy fitness regime Body lyric, a multi-purpose fitness centre has been established in the indoor stadium. A separate jogging and gymnasium track are available for the girl students. Besides, there are outdoor facilities for Cricket, Tennis, Soccer, etc. to attract many students.

11. Banking

A full-fledged branch of the Indian Overseas Bank is actively operational at SASTRA campus with 2 ATM’s – one for the general public and other exclusively for the girls at the Girls Hostel along with the City Union Bank ATM.

12. Canteen

The canteen at SASTRA provides the right ambience for the informal get-together and serves a wide range of culinary delights.

13. Hospital

The medical treatment given by the nursing staff and doctor on campus is offered without charge to all the students. Students are responsible for all other costs, which includes doctor visit off-campus, laboratory tests, ambulance services, prescriptions, and hospital care. Students are responsible for their own transportation to a physician office to a hospital except in an emergency when an ambulance is called.

14. Guest House

A well-furnished guest house with an adequate number of Accounts and non-Accounts is available for the visitors on prior requests and subject to availability.
