Your college years are definitely a good time to travel. Most of you probably don’t need permission, which means that you have your independence. Use this freedom and go travel to India! Meeting new people, eating different kinds of food, and visiting parts of the country you’ve never seen all sound like reason enough to grab the opportunity when it presents itself.
I recently wrote a little article on the most beautiful places to visit in India. I figured it would be helpful to give you a few travel suggestions from that list. Some of these places are not too commercial if you’re looking for something off the well-trodden path. Presenting the list of Best places to travel as a student in India:
1. Take a Road Trip: The most common road trip that people take is from Bombay to Goa. But you could extend that and go on to Gokarna, which is next on the list. The best time to go to Goa is during the winter, between November and December.
2. Gokarna, Karnataka: Not far from Goa, Gokarna is a good place to get away from the commercial hustle and bustle. Personal favourites of mine include Om Beach and Kudle Beach. I actually lived in Gokarna for a few years as a child.
3. Camping/Rafting in Rishikesh: The rapids here are rather enjoyable. I went on a school trip to Rishikesh a long time ago, and I remember rafting very well. It was a lot of fun. Make sure that you make reservations beforehand. You can follow the link for logistical details.
4. Adventure Sports at Solang, Himachal Pradesh: Located at the Himalayan Slopes, Solang offers beauty with the excitement of adventure sports! If you are an adrenaline junky like me, Solang is a good combination of nature and thrill.
5. Anthar Gange, Karnataka: If you like trekking, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Anthar. It’s pretty high up, around 4021 feet, located in the Kolar district with a pretty rocky landscape for trekking. But this terrain has secrets. Apparently, you may have to find your way out by exploring unexpected routes, squeezing through tight fissures, and perhaps even discovering new worlds.
6. Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh: Surrounded by the lush Eastern Ghats, Araku is famous for its scenic beauty. The monsoon season is probably the best time to visit Araku in order to experience natural beauty at its best.
7. Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh: While Dharamshala is rather well known, it is still a catch. There is so much to do here, like visiting the Dalai Lama Temple or The Tibet Museum.
8. Backwaters, Kerala: The backwaters are one of Kerala’s most distinctive features. If you want to enjoy beautiful scenic beauty, this is the place for you.
9. Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh: There is a magnificent fort here, built in the 13th century and right behind the fort you have a hypnotising sight. Also, an interesting fact, Gandikota is also known as the Grand Canyon of India.
10. Barren Island, Andaman Islands: Barren Island has the only active volcano in South Asia. It also has a reputation for being a famous scuba diving site with topographic locations formed by the lava and coral gardens rapidly spreading across the island.
11. Talasari Beach, Odisha: Not known widely, largely untouched, this beach is one that will remain in your memories. Calm, peaceful, and charming! If you’re looking to get away from the hordes of tourists, this is the beach for you.
12. Andretta, Himachal Pradesh: If you love art and want to be inspired, this is the place for you! Andretta is an artists’ colony that was established in the 1920s. Lots of inspiration to go around given the amazing landscape all around you!
13. Binsar and Almora, Uttarakhand: This place checks all the boxes. Nature, wildlife sanctuary, adventure, and HEIGHTS! In fact, the sanctuary at Binsar and Almora is a definite must-see.
14. Lunglei, Mizoram: A beautiful peace retreat in the Northeast, go relax and savour the calm. Plus, you can take lots of awesome pictures because Lunglei is gorgeous, especially at night.
15. Borra Caves, Andhra Pradesh: These limestone caves were formed over 150 million years ago! Enter for an astounding vision.
16. Elephanta Caves, Maharashtra: Another World Heritage Site, these caves are a true spectacle of architecture and art from medieval times. The caves have become a major tourist attraction, but nonetheless, they remain a sight worth seeing.
17. Gangtok, Sikkim: Located in the Himalayan range at 5,410 feet with mild temperatures throughout the year, this is a perfect destination for backpackers. Indulge in mountaineering, river rafting and other nature-oriented activities here.
18. Living Root Bridges, Meghalaya: These bridges are fascinating! If you ever wanted to experience bio-engineering, this is the place to be. The Khasi and Jaintia people built these bridges, using aerial roots of rubber fig trees, for rural connectivity along the southern part of the Shillong Plateau. The roots have now taken on a life of their own.
19. Bishnupur, West Bengal: Known for its famous terracotta temples and Baluchari sarees, Bishnupur is a historic goldmine.
20. Loktak Lake, Manipur: Also called the Floating Lake, Loktak is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India! Unfortunately, Loktak has a troubled future given current environmental concerns, so definitely get a visit in before it’s too late.
21. Bhedaghat, Madhya Pradesh: With the Narmada River, tall mountains, and the lovely Dhundar Falls, Bhedaghat is a nice calming experience.
22. Lonar Lake, Maharashtra: Lonar is a natural saline and alkaline lake, and is the only high-velocity impact crater formed in basaltic rock.
23. Maithon, Jharkhand: If you love to travel and you love to explore, then Maithon is the place for you.
24. Auli, Uttarakhand: Auli is known for its riveting ski retreats and enchanting surroundings. If you’re running away from the heat, go experience Auli’s oak-fringed slopes, and dense coniferous forests. And get your ski on!
25. Majuli, Assam: This is one of the largest river islands. Beautiful and largely unexplored, this cultural hub promises to be a unique experience!
26. Varanasi Ghats, Uttar Pradesh: Every year, lakhs converge on the Ghats of Varanasi. Indeed, the Ghats have a certain allure to them. The spirituality and the calmness that prevails here makes it an excellent destination to find some inner peace.
27. Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh: Tirthan is a place for adventure junkies and nature lovers alike. If you fall into the latter category, worry not, there is enough captivating landscape to admire. And if you are an adventure junkie, well Tirthan offers a whole lot of adventure sports, fishing, and exploration activities!
28. Malana, Himachal Pradesh: Located in Kullu Valley, Malana is known for its beauty and breathtaking sights. So you can expect to breathe in the crisp mountain air, and relax in the laps of greenery. I would say this is a good escape from the pollution and noise of crowded cities.
29. Ganpatipule Beach, Maharashtra: Go before it becomes commercial. It is a beautiful ride to Ganpatipule beach. Plus, the beach is mostly untouched, and there is a temple located on the shore to check out.
30. Varkala, Karnataka: Located in Southern Kerala, Varkala is a pristine paradise. Beaches, hills, lighthouses, shrines, you name it! Definitely one of the best offbeat locations in India. Also, you should visit Papanasam Beach!
31. Tosh, Himachal Pradesh: If you’re looking for tough terrain and a hippie vibe, this is the place for you! Hidden in the Himachal, Tosh gives you calm but fun all at once.
32. Manas National Park, Assam: Manas is a wonderful park to experience diverse wildlife. The best time to visit is between May and October.
33. Alleppey, Kerela: Alleppey is also known as The Venice of the East for its amazing, lush, countryside, lagoons, and waterways. Plus, it is pretty cheap to take a trip to Alleppey. If you need more information on the logistics, follow the link.
34. Tadoba Andhari National Park, Maharashtra: One among 50 tiger reserves in India, Tadoba is an excellent park to visit the regal, and nearly extinct, national animal.
35. Garhwal, Uttarakhand: Another great site for trekking amongst memorising mountains. If you do decide to go, don’t forget to visit Roopkund, a high- altitude glacial lake.
36. Narara Marine National Park, Gujarat: Off the coast of the Gulf of Kutch, Narara is an intertidal zone that is entirely submerged during high tides. When the tide pulls back, you can see all the amazing marine life that lays underneath. For instance, yellow sea sponges, crabs, and octopuses are some of the many wonderful creatures that dwell underwater.
37. Gondal, Gujarat: Gondal is interesting because it is known for its collection of vintage cars! So, as you would expect, the place is full of vintage cars because the ruling family were huge car enthusiasts. So don’t be surprised if you see a Vintage Ford strutting along casually.
38. Gokarna, Karnataka: Not far from Goa, Gokarna is a good place to get away from the commercial hustle and bustle. Personal favourites of mine include Om Beach and Kudle Beach.
39. Orchha Town, Madhya Pradesh: Experience grandeur as you pay a visit to Orchha Town located in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. Banked beside the Betwa River, inside the boundary are structures belonging to different eras.
40. Nohkalikai Falls, Meghalaya: This is the highest plunge waterfall in India! At 1115 feet, Nohkalikai is truly a vision.
41. Sela Pass, Arunachal Pradesh: This high-altitude pass has some of the most memorising views that cannot be forgotten.
42. Nubra Valley, Jammu Kashmir: The spectacular beauty of this valley looks like something out of a carefully curated painting.
43. Patan, Gujrat: Surprisingly, this is a site that is not visited often because this ancient fortified city has captivating detail and is certainly a good place to visit with some friends.
44. Tada Falls, Andhra Pradesh: Relatively unknown, Tada is a charming waterfall surrounded by trees. It is also a great place for hiking, picnics, and trekking!
45. Chandipur Beach, Odisha: Chandipur is famously known as the ‘Hide and Seek beach’. It is wonderful and astonishing, with a unique feature that draws in innumerable tourists. The water here draws back for about a stretch of 1 to 5 kilometres during low tides and appears again during high tides!
